JoseMartiTechnicalHigh School located in TwickenhamPark, SpanishTown, St. Catherine, Jamaica a gift from the government of Cuba, in 1977.
The school, established on January 10, 1977, had obtained 150 acres of farm land from the
government, which was maintained by students under the supervision of members
of staff who were qualified in the fields of Agronomy and Animal Husbandry, to
complement the other academic and practical courses.
Since its inception the school, painted in its light and dark hues of blue, metamorphosed
from a boarding school with 560 students into a technical high school with
enrollment over 1,200.
Dormitories were converted into classrooms and social and academic facilities
expanded over the years.
The school now has three science laboratories, clothing and textiles lab, a
media centre, library and a computer laboratory.
The school has made tremendous strides in the technical field. This
breakthrough started in 1989 when technical subjects such as Auto Mechanics,
Computers, Drafting, and Mechanical Engineering were incorporated into the
curriculum. But it was not until 1995, when the Japanese and Jamaican
governments signed an agreement, that the industrial education areas were
upgraded.
Two years later, four Japanese technicians provided training in the technical
areas for two years to Jose Marti teachers. Courses such as Auto Mechanics,
Information Technology, Drafting and Mechanical Engineering were upgraded.
As it relates to athletics, Jose Marti has excelled in rugby, with past and
present members representing Jamaica on the national level and playing with
various clubs overseas
As a school we have also made great strides in the area of Football, Cricket,
Netball, Volleyball to name a few. The school is continually working hard
to strengthened the sports programs.
Despite all the challenges, the school has lived by their motto: "Trabajando
y estudiando para ser el hombre total" translated as "Working and
studying to be the total man."
Thus, they have not only incorporated the technical vocations to the curriculum
but also the social clubs create more rounded students.
"We have a very active Inter-School Christian Fellowship club, cadet clubs
and so many others.
